When you picture a paradise island in your head, what does it look like?
For a guess, it has baby powder white sand, translucent blue sea, swaying palms, and a gentle breeze which takes away the sting of the hot sun. There isn’t a cloud in the sky, and there is the scent of coconuts in the air.
If that is what you are picturing, then you are basically seeing the Maldives!
If you have ever wanted to go to the Maldives for a vacation then there is no better time than right now! Prices are lower than they have ever been and there are some great deals to be found online. Once upon a time this used to be a destination for the rich and famous, but that has all changed, and now us mere mortals are able to visit this slice of heaven!
Located just south west of India, grouped to be as part of Southern Asia, the Maldives are a group of coral islands. There are actually 1192 islands in the archipelago, but most of them are uninhabited, with only 80 of them featuring tourist resorts. The biggest city, and the capital, is Male. This is a great spot to visit, and has some wonderful markets to explore.
Of course, the main image of the Maldives is of that beach setting we talked about at the start of our chat, and this is certainly a mainstay. You can check out one of those idyllic and iconic bungalows which stand over the ocean on stilts, waving hello to all manner of interesting marine life passing by your door every single morning as you wake up!
Snorkelling and diving are fantastic pastimes in this part of the world, and we know that the Indian Ocean overall is home to a huge array of amazing dive sites. One of the world’s best is located in this part of the world, namely the Blue Hole, which is on Baa Atoll. This is a place for experienced divers, however there are many which are suitable for less experienced divers, a little closer to shore. You can also complete your PADI certification here – what a wonderful skill to take home with you!
If you prefer to spend your break in a much more chilled out way, then you can of course sit and watch the sun go down, a cocktail in hand, or you can try some of the most delicious food you’ll ever allow to grace your palate. The flavours of Maldivian food will take your breath away in the best way possible, so definitely try some whilst you’re there. If you’re a seafood lover, you’re seriously in luck.
The Maldives are a fantastic destination for honeymooners, but you don’t need to be loved up to visit this destination – you’ll simply fall in love with the place, and for many people that’s more than enough!
